History Of The Song

First of all, it's essential to know that "Canção da Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo" is the anthem of the Military Police of São Paulo State. In 1964, Captain Antonio Augusto Neves, head of the Public Relations area of the (then called) Paulista Public Force commented with General João Franco Pontes that military units usually have anthems but the "Bandeirante Militia" (nickname for the Paulista police) hadn't adopted anyone until that moment. A very important name was then called upon for this sacred mission: Guilherme de Almeida, whose reputation precedes him (lawyer, journalist, heraldist, film critic, poet, essayist, translator and a soldier and active voice during the civil war in 1932), “It is an honor for me to write the lyrics for the Anthem of the Public Force”, said Almeida. Captain Neves got concerned once he hadn't been having any answer from Almeida's results after quite a time. At some point Almeida answers and say “Captain, it's no use sitting down and trying to write the lyrics, inspiration must come. When it's ready, I'll call you ”. Later on, still in 1964, Captain Neves finally receives the call he so awaited. He immediately went to Almeida's office, read the lyrics and, emotionally, thanked him on behalf of the General Commander Pontes. After handing the lyrics to Major Conductor Alcides Jácomo Degobbi, the melody was created and played for the first time at Barro Branco Academy, on December 15, 1964, the commemorative date of creation of the Paulista Public Force, which later changed name to Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo's Military Police).

Guerreiros Paulistas' Comment on the Release

It was an old dream and it is now an honour to produce this release. The song has inspiring lyrics and an epic melody, a perfect combination. When I was a child, I got as gift a mini vinyl disc with this song on one side and the Brazilian anthem on the other side, I liked both songs equally, but something in the Paulista song used to touch me more, maybe it's its crescent melody, but what I can say is that since then I have had this affection for the Military Police's anthem. When I started studying the topic of the Paulista Revolution in 1932, I came across Guilherme de Almeida and I then I realised how admirable he was. He fought the war, he wrote poems (including the lyrics for the song in question), he even like and drew Heraldry (another passion I also share). I also discovered later on he wrote the lyrics for Canção do Expedicionário, the anthem for the Brazilian troops which fought during the WWII. After learning all that, I made it my mission to have a version of this song released by Guerreiros Paulistas.

Guerreiros Paulistas - The Best of (2017) + 7 Facts

The project "Guerreiros Paulistas" was initiated in 2006 with some demo songs and from that time on it has released songs about the Culture and History of São Paulo in styles mainly as Rock, Industrial and Neo-Folk and covering historical events from very past, the modern times and and about a possible future in an album of Alternate History. In 2017, "The Best Of" album is released in a possibly ending of the project activities. Below there is the playlist of the album which has songs in new versions or remastered:

Guerreiros Paulistas

Guerreiros Paulistas was formed in 2006 with the meaning of sharing and promoting the Paulista Culture and History with different styles from Rock to Electronic music. The first demo was released in 2006.

Guerreiros Paulistas' Discography

Avante (2008)

After the demo songs about 2006, "Avante" is the album that puts in practice the ideas had for Guerreiros Paulistas. The album's theme is the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 and all the songs are full of History and Culture.

 

   

We Fight Together (2010)

This is album is named "We Fight Together" because it's not focused only on São Paulo this time, but in Brazil during the World War II as Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) . The album cover has Estaiada Bridge which is in São Paulo City and has as well a flag similar to the one used during the Paulista Revolutin in 1932 but with a soldier, representing all the Paulistas who fought on the Second World War with their Lusophone brothers from other States of Brazil in Italy against the German Army.

Neste CD nós criamos uma História Alternativa (que é um gênero da ficção científica) pra São Paulo e seu mundo ao redor. Em um futuro próximo, os países socialistas latino-americanos ganham força em detrimento da decadência moral européia e norte-americana, que cada vez mais rejeitaram e acabaram por aniquilar sua forma de pensar tradicional com políticas liberais de esquerda e imigrações desenfreadas. No Brasil o ambiente se torna perigoso quando, mais e mais, cresce a tensão entre liberais de esquerda e conservadores. Quando o governo centralizador de Brasília começa a, definitivamente e oficialmente, se aproximar dos líderes socialistas vizinhos, eclode uma reação forte dos conservadores e econômico-liberais (apoiados por alguns setores do Exército, Polícias locais e conservadores norte-americanos). Brasília se desestabiliza e iniciam-se momentos de caos até que finalmente se assina um novo tratado onde se formam os Estados Confederados do Brasil, dando liberdade para que cada Estado tome sua posição sobre incorporar as políticas socialistas ou seguir outros rumos. São Paulo (agora Estado Nacional de São Paulo) e mais alguns Estados da Confederação se mantém não-socialistas e inicia-se um estado de Guerra Fria que dura por volta de 10 anos quando, por fim, os socialistas começam o ataque para terminar de conquistar os Estados não-socialistas que restaram. 

For this album we created an Alternative History (which is a genre of sci-fi) for São Paulo and its surroundings. In a near future, the socialist Latin-American countries gain power over the moral decadence of Europe and the USA that more and more reject and ended up annihilating their traditional way of thinking with left-liberal politics and uncontrolled immigration. In Brazil the ambient get dangerous when the tension between left-liberals and conservatives grows increasingly. When the centralizing government of the capital Brasília gets definitively and officially closer to the socialist neighbour countries a reaction conflict starts strongly initiated by conservatives and liberal-economists (supported by some sectors of the Army, Local Polices and the North-American Conservatives). The capital Brasília destabilizes and moments of chaos start until a treaty is finally signed forming the Estados Confederados do Brasil (Confederated States of Brazil), setting all the States free to decide if they will be socialists or follow another path. São Paulo (now São Paulo National State) and some other States remain non-socialists and then a kind of Cold War start lasting about 10 year when suddenly the socialists start an attack to finish conquering the remaining non-socialist States of the Confederation.

   

          

 Identidade Paulista (2014)

This is the most experimental album we've done until the moment due to the daring (maybe dangerous) mixture of styles. Because of its title "Identidade Paulista" (Paulista Identity) we bring some elements of folk music and we work with facts that form such Identity. Versions of songs and historical audio are also included because they are our typical mark. The cover is an altered version of the "Wanderer Above The Sea of Fog" of the German Romanticist painter Caspar David Friedrich from the 19th Century.

Histórias de São Paulo é um EP com algumas faixas bonus e outras idéias do projeto em uma forma de comemoração pelos 10 anos de Guerreiros Paulistas. Por ser uma mistura de faixas os estilos estão bem variados, contendo rock, neo folk, ambient e a sempre presente influência eletrônica.

01 - El Rey de São Paulo
Essa música retrata o episódio Histórico em que Amador Bueno é aclamado Rei de São Paulo. A melodia é uma versão de Battalia do compositor alemão Paul Heinlein.


02 - Guerra dos Emboabas
Essa música retrata o episódio Histórico chamado Guerra dos Emboabas, quando homens do nordeste, portugueses e pessoas de várias partes do Brasil vieram à Minas Gerais por causa do ouro que estava sendo encontrado lá, mas acabaram cruzando com os Bandeirantes Paulistas, que já dominavam a região a mais tempo. A melodia é uma versão da canção medieval "Santa Maria, Strela do Dia", de autoria do Rei Afonso X de Castela e Leão. Uma letra nova foi criada para adaptar ao ambiente Paulista

03 - A Legião Negra
Essa música é sobre um episódio Histórico que só recente está sendo melhor explorado, que é a participação dos negros na Revolução de 1932, formando o que foi chamado de Legião Negra. A narração é a voz de Oswaldo Flausino.

Essa música trabalha com o ritmo caipira da viola, mas fazendo uma mistura com rock e um pouco de instrumentação eletrônica. Na introdução é a voz de Cornélio Pires, anunciando "Jorginho do Sertão", a primeira música caipira gravada no Brasil.

No começo dessa música temos a narração que foi adaptada da Encenação da Formação da Vila de São Vicente, em 2015, uma das melhores apresetações culturais do Brasil. João Ramalho foi um importante líder que, junto com o Cacique Tibiriçá, formou as bases da sociedade Paulista.

01 - A Tradição Que Importa

[PT] Esta faixa de introdução é uma marcha com elementos de música eletrônica e uma voz marcante do locutor de um documentário feito para a Polícia Militar Paulista por Jean Manzon.

[EN] This is the intro track which is a march song with elements of electronic music with a unique voice of the narrator of a documentary produced by Jean Manzon about the Paulista Police.

02 - O Passo Do Soldado

[PT] Mais uma música histórica de 1932 que fizemos nossa versão. "O Passo Do Soldado" teve sua letra composta por Guilherme de Almeida e foi musicada por Marcello Tupynambá (Fernando Lobo) e é aqui interpretada por Máximo Puglisi com o Coro e Orquestra Cruzeiro do Sul, foi gravada pela Colúmbia. Antes do nome atual, a música se chamava "Marcha da Liga de Defesa Paulista".

[EN] One more historical song of 1932 we made a version. "O Passo Do Soldado" had its lyrics composed by Guilherme de Almeida and its melody made by Marcello Tupynambá (Fernando Lobo), its sang by Máximo Puglisi with the Cruzeiro do Sul Choir and Orchestra and it was recorded by Colúmbia. Before the current name the song's name was "March for the Paulista Defence League".

[PT] Essa música é uma versão da composição de Antônio Carlos Gomes, que foi um compositor Paulista da Era Romântica. Foi o primeiro compositor do Novo Mundo a ter suas óperas aceitas na Itália naquela época. No final da música há uma parte da canção "Mérica Mérica" que é o hino dos imigrantes Italianos no Brasil (principalmente os de Veneto).

[EN] This song is a version of a composition of Antônio Carlos Gomes, who was a Paulista composer of the Romantic Era. He was the first composer of the New World to have his operas well accepted in Italy at that time. At the end of this song there is part of the song "Mérica Mérica" which is the anthem of the Italian settlers in Brazil (mainly the ones from Veneto)

06 - Você Sabe Onde Eu Moro (Tonico e Tinoco)

[PT] Nós não costumamos fazer coisas engraçadas, mas essa versão de Tonico e Tinoco tem um tom muito divertido. Colocar a música Caipira dentro do nosso padrão foi uma missão bem diferente.

[EN] We don't usually do funny stuff, but this version of Tonico e Tinoco's song has a very fun touch. Putting the Caipira music into our pattern was a very different mission.

07 - Colônia Italiana de Quiririm

[PT] Esse é um audio-collage em homenagem ao Distrito de Quiririm, em Taubaté, que foi incialmente formado por italianos e todo ano concede uma Festa Italiana. A voz masculina que aparece é de Dídimo Gadioli que era um morador antigo da região. Também é citado o grupo Santa Lucia.

[EN] This is an audio-collage in a Tribute to the District of Quiririm, in Taubaté, which was initially formad by Italian settlers. Every year they organize a Festival with typical food and music. The male voice on the track is of Didimo Gadioli an old resident of the region. It's also mentioned in the song the group Santa Lucia.

[PT] Esta é a mesma música da faixa 02 "O Passo do Soldado" porém sem a voz original. Nós gravamos as vozes do refrão em uma forma de coral marcial que lembra até um coro viking.

[EN] This is same song of Track 02 "O Passo do Soldado" but without the original voice. We recorded the voices of the refrain in a kind of martial choir, resembling maybe a Viking chant.

[PT] Em meio a instabilidades e crises internas dentro do novo Estado Nacional de São Paulo, memórias de 1932 são resgatas como a versão cantada de Paris-Belfort que aparece aqui em uma versão Industrial.

[EN] In the midst of instabilities and internal crisis in São Paulo National State, memories of 1932 are reviewed as the vocal version for Paris-Belfort which comes here in an Industrial version.


03 - Segunda Revolução Constitucionalista
[PT] Com os ataques socialistas, São Paulo se vê novamente em uma guerra como em 1932, desta vez para proteger sua constituição e não se tornar um Estado confederado ateu e de Estado totalmente controlador.

[EN] Under socialist attacks, São Paulo sees itself again in a war as in 1932, but this time not fighting for a creation of a constitution but to protect it and to avoid becoming an atheist Confederate State with a totally controlling State.


04 - Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (ROTA)
[PT] A Polícia Militar Paulista volta novamente a ser a Força Pública Paulista, sendo o exército de São Paulo e a ROTA é a Polícia que é também responsável por guerrear socialistas que causam motins e guerras internas.

[EN] The Paulista Police becomes again the São Paulo Public Force , being São Paulo's army and ROTA it's the police which also fight socialists who cause riots and internal rumpus.

[EN] It's July 9, National day in São Paulo but this year the preparation for war changes the ambient completely. The song finishes with part of a speech of César Ladeira "The Paulista hasn't changed".


07 - Brother's War
[PT] As batalhas começam nas fronteiras e motins eclodem dentro dos Estados das Forças Unidas de Guerra.

[PT] Nesta última faixa o Hino dos Bandeirantes aparece em uma versão vocoder, com um aspecto retro-futurista e ao mesmo tempo post-apocalíptico nos fazendo tentar concluir o resultado desta guerra.

[EN] As the last track of the album, this song is the Hino dos Bandeirantes (Bandeirante's Anthem) in a vocoder version, with retro-futurist and post-apocalyptic aspects making us wonder about the result of this war.

Este CD se chama We Fight Together (Nós Lutamos Juntos) por trazer músicas com contextos mais gerais, não focadas apenas em São Paulo. A capa é a Ponte Estaiada na Cidade de São Paulo e uma bandeira parecida com a que foi usada na Revolução Constitucionalista de 1932, porém com um soldado, representando os soldados Paulistas que lutaram na Itália com seus irmãos lusófonos de outros Estados do Brasil contra o Exército Alemão.

[EN] About the Album
This is album is named "We Fight Together" because it's not focused only on São Paulo this time. The cover has Estaiada Bridge which is in São Paulo City and has as well a flag similar to the one used during the Paulista Revolutin in 1932 but with a soldier, representing all the Paulistas who fought on the Second World War with their Lusophone brothers from other States of Brazil against the German Army.

[PT] A primeira faixa é, na verdade, uma abertura pra segunda, uma justificativa. Ela é um audio-collage contendo falas dos líderes dos países envolvidos na Segunda Guerra e tem um Soundtrack de filme como fundo, resultando em algo emociante e tenso ao mesmo tempo.

[EN] The first track is actually an intro for the second track, a justification for it. It is an audio-collage containing speeches of great leaders involved in the World War II and has a movie soundtrack as background, resulting in something very tense and emotional at the same time.


Homenagem à FEB

[PT] Essa é nossa homenagem a todos os soldados que saíram do Brasil cruzando o Oceano para combater na Itália durante a Segunda Guerra, a FEB. Em um estilo Power Metal, a música tem na letra trechos da Canção do Expedicionário.

[EN] This our tribute to all the soldier who left Brazil crossing the Ocean to fight in Italy during the World War II, the FEB. In a Power Metal style, the song also has in its lyrics parts of Canção do Expedicionário.


I Love São Paulo City

[PT] Esta foi uma idéia divertida posta em prática. Essa música é um cover da música "I Love New York City" da banda Andrew WK. Resolvemos fazer a versão local da música mas com uma diferença.  A cidade de São Paulo tem muitas homenagens em música mas essa fala à partir da perspectiva de um cidadão criado com valores conservadores,  com influências italianas e claro, trabalhador.

[EN] This was a fun idea in practice. The song is a cover of "I Love New York City" of Andrew WK. We decided to do our "local version" of the composition, but with a difference. São Paulo City has many music tributes, but only few represent the real and traditional people from the City, that's why this song is from a perspective of a conservative citizen, middle-class with Italian influences and of course, hard-working.


Jovens de 32 (por Paulo Bonfim)
[PT] É o poema Jovens de 32 declamado por Paulo Bonfim no evento organizado pelo CIEE sobre 1932. Tivemos a oportunidade de gravar a declamação a na música usamos de fundo a música The Final Countdown executada pela London Symphony Orchestra.

[EN] It is the poem Jovens de 32 (Youth of 32) recited by Paulo Bonfim in an event organized by CIEE about the Revolution in 1932. We had the opportunity to record the declaiming and in the song we use as background the song The Final Countdown played by London Symphony Orchestra.
