When Etternal, the project of Emerson Olaf and Silas Rocha, had to be halted due to Silas' moving, in June 2002, Emerson called Bruno Zubi and then later William Valadam to form a new band which was later called Holy Cross.
Initially, the trio started with covers of bands as Oficina G3 but soon Bruno Zubi composed some melodies and riffs and Emerson came with lyrics in (poor) English. All that work resulted in the first versions of "Medieval Heart" and "King of Eternity".

It was a band of teenagers and not even a pedal for distortion was available, also, at that time, the only place they could rehearse was the church they were members of: Assembléia de Deus Chácara Inglesa (Assembly of God in Chácara Inglesa), but it was a traditional church and that public wasn't a big fan of metal, naturaly.

By the end of 2002, the band had added some cover songs to their playlist (Rodox, Catedral) and that was the time when William left the band. Vynill (Vinicius) was called to replace him on the bass.

Since the first rehearsals in the church, Emerson were recording the band so, still by the end of 2002, he uploaded recordings of "Medieval Heart" and "Jesus" (a rock cover of Diante do Trono) to the popular and beloved website mp3.com "Medieval Heart" surprisingly (and maybe due to the lack of competitors) got to the top charts of the "Spiritual Metal" category. Emerson called this recordings "pre-demo" once they were still very raw (unworked and unrehearsed). Thanks to "The MP3.com 2003 Project" we could recover the face of Holy Cross' account at Mp3.com
During 2003, Bruno invested in the band buying instruments and equipment, but it was becoming harder and harder to keep practicing in the church. This was also an extremely creative period for Bruno, which composed 5 strongly Chirstian-themed metal songs: "Nova Vida" (New Life), "Chame Por Ele" (Call Him), "Em Ti Confio" (In You I Trust), "Eterna Verdade" (Eternal Truth), "Meu Escudo" (My Shield). Gabriela joins the band for the keyboard and, as a poetry lover, composes the poem "Inverno Eterno" (Endless Winter) to which Bruno composes the melody.
Those interesting and creative songs in Portuguese have been played live but never recorded (as of 2025).

Rehearsing became scarce and practicing in a studio that Bruno arranged happened for only two or three times. At the end of 2004, Silas Rocha (former member of Etternal with Emerson), invites Holy Cross for a church event, this came to be the first presentation of Holy Cross. Etternal also played some covers on this day, including a version in Portuguese for "Psalm 151" of the Swedish band "Sons of Thunder"

First concert of Holy Cross
Holy Cross was invited to play at Assembléia de Deus Unida, another church, in the beginning of 2005. Gabriela couldn't be present, but she was in process of leaving the band anyway. Unfortunately there are no photos of this second and last presentation of Holy Cross. Also in 2005, Emerson moved to the countryside, which made it hard to keep the band going, although members tried for a while.
In February, 2005, before Emerson's departure, Bruno, Vynill and him went to visit the friends Michelle Pedroso and Aline, in Ferraz de Vasconcelos, São Paulo. The band played some songs there just for fun and Michelle recorded part of the song "Meu Escudo", which is in Portuguese. Aline also played the keyboard for a while and Michelle even brought a violin to follow the band in a song or two.

In 2012 Emerson met up Bruno to play and remember some Holy Cross' songs (Music Hall studio, Pindamonhangaba, 2012)

Since the first rehearsals in the church in 2002, Emerson were recording the band. He even uploaded one recording of "Medieval Heart" to mp3.com which surprisingly (and maybe due to the lack of competitors) got to the top charts of the "Spiritual Metal" category.
In 2005, new versions of "Medieval Heart" and "King of Eternity" were recorded and they became the official demo songs of Holy Cross.

Holy Cross was not playing anymore, but Emerson really wanted to register the ideas of the band so he invited Moisés Missão of the band Templo de Fogo (Itú, São Paulo), who recorded fresh new guitar tracks for "Medieval Heart", "King of Eternity" and new composition called "Vaterland" (Fatherland).

02 - King of Eternity
Esta é uma de nossas músicas mais antigas, de 2002. Eu me lembro de termos muitas influências de Luca Turilli, Olaf Hayer, Rhapsody
e etc, apesar da música não ser tão rápida quanto um Power Metal. "King
of Eternity" fala de uma resistência de guerreiros cristãos contra a
invasão de guerreiros islâmicos do oriente médio.
This is one of our oldest songs, from 2002. I remember we used to have a lot of influences of Luca Turilli, Olaf Hayer, Rhapsody
etc, even though this song is not as fast as the genre Power Metal
requires. "King of Eternity" talks about a resistance of Christian
warriors against the invasion of middle-east Islamic warriors.

Essa melodia foi, originalmente, composta por Henrique VIII, Rei da Inglaterra (e França) e é chamada "En Vray Amoure" e não tem letras, é instrumental, por isso, as letras foram tiradas de um poema deste mesmo Rei chamado "The Time Of Youth Is To Be Spent".

influência neo folk, ela caracteriza um personagem representando todos
aqueles que foram ameaçados ou mortos porque tiveram uma interpretação
mais pura da Bíblia, (pré-Reforma), contrariando diversos ritos e costumes da Igreja Romana na Idade Medieval.

one of the our oldest songs, from 2002. With a gothic ambient and neo
folk influences, this songs brings a character representing all those
who were threaten or killed because they had a more pure interpretation
of the Bible (pre-Reformation), going against many of the rites and practices of the Roman Catholic Church on the Middle Ages.

is a simple and bucolic composition, no guitars, no drums and as the
name suggests, according to the ambience of the album, it talks about
the simplicity of the gospel against false rites and practices.

nome sugere, de acordo com a ambiência do CD, ela fala da simplicidade
do Evangelho contra falsos ritos e práticas.

Decidimos
fechar este CD com uma versão do hino nacional da Finlândia, o que nos
deu um pouco de trabalho em relação a pronúncia do finlandês, mas
conseguimos chegar ao resultado final.

decided to close this album with a version of the National Anthem of
Finland, what was quite difficult for us because of the pronunciation of
the Finnish language, but we managed to get to a final result.

- Como surgiram os Holy Cross?
A banda surgiu em 2002, sem muitas pretensões, apenas querendo seguir o estilo metal com influências de ambientações medieval e gótica. De início eram Emerson Olaf, Bruno Zubi e William Queiroz.
- Os Holy Cross passaram por algumas mudanças de integrantes. De que forma essas mudanças influenciaram a banda?
Na verdade as mudanças de integrantes quase não influenciaram na banda, que seguiu na mesma idéia principal.
- Quais as principais influências da banda?
Em questão de estilos musicais a banda é influenciada por melodic metal e gothic. Os integrantes da banda têm bastante influência de Angra, Rhapsody of Fire, Helloween, Stratovarius, Lacrimosa, Nightwish, Haggard, dentre outras. Gostamos muito de contextualizar as músicas, então é possível encontrar referências históricas também,
-Em que lugares já fizeram tours e qual foi o show mais marcante?
A banda, infelizmente, não fez muitas apresentações e ainda não é possível destacar um show que tenha sido marcante
- A banda já passou por alguma situação engraçada ou inesperada em algum show ou gravação?
O início da banda teve diversas situações engraçadas, pois não tínhamos equipamentos suficientes e próprios pro metal, então já fizemos diversos tipos de adaptações com aparelhagens, microfones e etc. O mais importante na época era a força de vontade de querer tocar.
- O que acharam do lançamento do álbum Vaterland (2011)? Como foi a reação do público?
Vaterland na verdade é uma reunião de idéias antigas e novas. Tínhamos um material já gravado mas não por inteiro então terminamos essas músicas e gravamos algumas músicas novas e formamos o álbum, que teve como guitarrista convidado o músico Moisés Missão, da banda Templo de Fogo de power metal. É importante lembrar que, como álbum, de certa forma, conceitual, Vaterland tem versões de músicas medievais, inclusive uma música do Rei da Inglaterra Henry VIII em que cantamos como letra um outro poema deste mesmo Rei. O público reagiu muito bem, mais do que o esperado, é possível encontrar o álbum para download em diversos sites, porém como somos experimentalistas, sempre há alguns que não gostam das inovações.
- No geral, quais os temas que são abordados nas músicas e quem cria as composições?
Basicamente trabalhamos em uma ambientação medieval ou, ao menos, épica. Logo, é possível perceber influências do Romantismo do século XIX. Cada frase e nome de música é bem escolhida e tem uma relação com algo na História, então as músicas tem um sentido ideológico muito forte, a própria música Vaterland é bastante assim. Abordamos também o Cristianismo, o qual é a fé que professamos. As composições mais antigas foram criadas por mim, Emerson Olaf, e Bruno Zubi, as mais recentes foram criadas somente por mim. Algo interessante é que existem umas 4 ou 5 músicas em português, todas criadas inteiramente por Zubi e são músicas muito boas que lembram a banda alemã Freedom Call. Infelizmente, essas músicas não puderam ser gravadas no álbum Vaterland, pois ficariam fora de contexto.
- O que pensam sobre os estilos de metal? Acham que o antigo heavy metal está perdendo cada vez mais espaço para os novos estilos de metal?
O problema não está em inovar, o problema está em abandonar o espírito em que o Heavy Metal tem que ser trabalhado. Se algo é produzido com intuito de ser Pop e ter fama, isso nunca vai ser um metal de verdade, sonoramente não há jeito de se juntar as duas coisas. Na hora em que estive mixando e masterizando Vaterland, foram as minhas escolhas que determinaram se a banda seria metal ou pop. E sim, pensamos que o antigo Heavy Metal perde muito espaço para bandas que não sabem o que estão fazendo, bandas que tem como referência de metal o Linking Park, por exemplo (não que esta seja uma banda ruim, mas muitas bandas novas só vêem o metal a partir dessa banda pra frente.). Ao mesmo tempo que a internet facilita o conhecimento, ela forma pessoas com conhecimentos apenas superficiais, então um garoto que nunca procuraria pelo metal por si só, acaba vendo um vídeo no youtube, se empolga e agora é um "metaleiro", pessoas assim formarão bandas, prejudicando a cena.
- Quais são os planos da banda para 2012? Pretendem gravar um novo álbum, fazer um videoclipe?
Comentarei sobre coisas que teria ter falado antes mas reservei para esta pergunta. A banda está parada a um certo tempo já, a produção de Vaterland foi feita para resgatarmos nosso material antigo, como eu já disse. Nem todos os músicos da banda moram na mesma cidade, o que dificulta bastante, mas mesmo assim a banda procura por novos músicos para voltar a atividade. Tendo um time completo, pretendemos sim gravar um novo álbum, pois existem as músicas em português a serem gravadas, mas antes disso, a prioridade de verdade, é fazer muitas apresentações e tornar a banda cada vez mais conhecida e, de repente, ter também um videoclip.
